In 2017, the annual New Jersey Governor's Surf Fishing Tournament tournament will be held on Sunday, May 21 at Island Beach State Park.
Known for its pristine sandy beaches, Island Beach State Park is one of New Jersey's most popular surf fishing areas.
A variety of species are eligible for entry in the tournament. Overall length determines the winner. All fish must meet minimum length tournament requirements.
The individual who catches the overall largest fish wins the "Governor's Award," and has his/her name engraved on the Governor's Cup, which is permanently displayed at the park.
Fishing equipment is awarded to winners who catch the largest fish in each species category. Winners from the early entry drawing and the tournament must be present during the afternoon awards ceremony to claim their prizes or they will be forfeited.
Anglers planning to participate in the tournament should always register early. Tournament anglers will also need to complete the NJ Saltwater Recreational Registry prior to the event.

2015 New Jersey Free Fishing Days
New Jersey Free Fishing Days
June 13 and October 17, 2015
For 2015, the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife has split the Free Fishing Days. The first will be held on Saturday, June 13. The second Free Fishing Day will occur on Saturday, October 17, 2015.
The June Free Fishing Day will be held in conjunction with National Fishing and Boating Week; the October date will allow the public to take advantage of the fall trout stocking. On free fishing days, fishing is allowed on the Garden State’s public waters without a license or trout stamp. All other regulations, including size and daily catch limits, remain in effect.
New Jersey's Free Fishing Days allow beginners, experts, residents, non-residents, and others to experience fishing without having to purchase a license. For those just starting out, the Division of Fish and Wildlife offers many programs and classes to advance from beginner to expert.
The Pequest State Trout Hatchery in Oxford, Warren County offers free fishing programs. Pequest offers a Natural Resource Education Center with a variety of exhibits and displays on wildlife, a butterfly garden, picnic areas and hiking trails. There is also a handicapped-accessible fishing site along the Pequest River.
For those who enjoy group fishing, there are usually children's fishing derbies held on Free Fishing Days weekend. Derbies are organized by townships, service clubs and sportsmen’s groups, and are typically open to kids up to age 16.

Massachusetts Saltwater Fishing Derby Awards
In February, Massachusetts fisheries officials awarded 26 trophies to winners of the 2014 Massachusetts Saltwater Fishing Derby during a ceremony held at the New England Boat Show in Boston.
The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) Saltwater Fishing Derby awards pins to all qualifying entries in 21 species categories and presents trophies to anglers who landed the heaviest fish in each species category.
Winners are chosen in three divisions: men, women and juniors (age 15 and younger). There were a total of 100 entries from anglers from four states in 2014.
To qualify for the Saltwater Fishing Derby, entries must be caught by hook and line and weighed in at DMF-certified weigh stations.
Anglers participating in the catch and release component of the derby are required to submit a picture of their fish on a measuring device.

2015 Miami International Boat Show Big Game Fishing Seminar
The 2015 Titans of Big Game Fishing Roundtable, presented by FishTrack.com, will be held at the Miami International Boat Show at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, February 13th.
The seminar will be held at the Miami Beach Convention Center on the main stage in the Big Game Room. The Titans of Big Game Fishing seminar is free for all boat show attendees.
The Titans of Big Game Fishing Roundtable will take place in front of a live audience and will feature three top sportfishing captains from around the world. During this one-hour, town-hall-style talk, FishTrack’s panel of experts will field a range of questions covering key topics in offshore fishing.
The talk will include tips on trolling, finding fish, bait management, boat maintenance, fishing the tides and moon, seamanship, fishing knots and more. There will also be door prizes for attendees.
The live audience will be able to ask questions during the roundtable discussion and those who can't attend the talk can still participate via FishTrack's Twitter feed (@FishTrack) and Facebook (Facebook.com/FishTrack). Anyone can send the Titans of Big Game Fishing a question via social media using the hashtag #fishingtitans.

The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife has announced that this year's Governor's Surf Fishing Tournament will be moving from October to May. In 2014 the tournament will be held on Sunday, May 18, at Island Beach State Park.
Anglers can feel great about the use of their registration fees, as all funds raised are used for very worthwhile purposes. These include the purchase of specialized wheelchairs that provide the disabled and elderly beach access, surf fishing instruction programs and equipment, marine education and restoration efforts, and surf fishing access.

The pre-registration fee for the tournament is $15 for ages 18 and up and the registration fee on tournament day is $20. The registration fee for ages 13-17 is $5 and registration is free for ages 12 and under.

American Littoral Society Striped Bass Tagging Weekend

Galilee, RI
The American Littoral Society (ALS) is sponsoring a fishing trip with the Society's most prolific and successful tagger, Captain Al Anderson of Narragansett, Rhode Island, aboard his boat, "The Prowler".
The boat will depart from the port of Galilee, RI, right next to the ferry to Block Island. The Prowler is a 42 ft. North Carolina Custom Express twin diesel sportfisherman with a cabin, tower and full electronics. The trip will include striped bass tagging while fishing the rocky coast of Rhode Island and the rips of Block Island.
Captain Al, who has recently been inducted into the IGFA Hall of Fame; has been stalking and tagging stripers in Rhode Island Waters for over 40 years and has tagged and released well over 50,000 gamefish during that time.
The trip is limited to 6 anglers for the weekend, with an all-day fishing trip both Saturday and Sunday. All bait, tackle, and tags will be provided.
Participants are encouraged to bring surf fishing gear along, as there will be opportunities to experience some of Rhode Island's great shoreline fishing as well.
On Saturday the party will meet for a late lunch (Dutch treat) at a local seafood restaurant. After lunch, visitors can visit the Point Judith light house, and take a stroll out to Black Rock on Narragansett Bay.

$325 - Non Member
Price includes all costs for 2 fishing trips and tags, as well as a signed copy of Capt. Al's latest book, "Island Stripers". Anglers are responsible for their own lodging and meals. Call Jeff at (732) 291-0055 for more information.

2012 NJ Governor's Surf Fishing Tournament
The 21st Annual Governor's Surf Fishing Tournament was held on Sunday October 7 at Island Beach State Park. At the event over 500 anglers caught more than 130 fish.
New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno and Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin were on site to greet tournament participants and to take part in the awards ceremony.
Bill Sheppard of Seaside Park, NJ, took the grand prize and NJ Governor's Cup by catching a 20 3/8" bluefish. Mr. Sheppard received two rod-and-reel combinations, a $100 gift card to Orvis (courtesy of World Fishing Network), a plaque, and will have his name engraved on the Governor's Cup, which is permanently on display at Island Beach State Park.
In addition to the grand prize, eighteen anglers received rod and reel combinations for their prize-winning fish in the various species categories. The anglers who caught the largest blackfish and bluefish also received a $50 gift certificate to Orvis, also courtesy of the World Fishing Network.
Everyone who registered for the tournament was entered into a raffle drawing, which was held prior to the awards ceremony, and pre-registrant entrants were entered into a raffle to win a Surf Rocket, which is a specially designed compressed air casting cannon.
Overall fish length determined the grand prize winner, as well as place winners for each of the species categories. There were categories for children, teen and adult anglers, including sub-categories for male and female anglers.
The event was sponsored by the NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife and Division of Parks and Forestry, the New Jersey State Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs, the Jersey Coast Anglers Association, and the New Jersey Beach Buggy Association.
More than $130,000 has been raised since the inception of the tournament for conservation and education projects and improved beach access.
