NOAA's Fisheries Service plans raise the spiny dogfish quota to 20 million pounds for 2011. The new quota would be a 33 percent increase over the 2010 catch limit of 15 million pounds.
The U.S. commercial spiny dogfish fishery generated revenues of nearly $2.4 million during the 2009 fishing year.
NOAA's Fisheries Service updated the spiny dogfish stock assessment in the fall of 2010, incorporating 2009 catch data and results from the agency's 2010 trawl survey. The updated assessment indicated that the stock was healthy and not being overfished. This information was provided to the Mid-Atlantic Fishery
Management Council and the New England Fishery Management Council, which jointly develop management measures for the spiny dogfish stock. The councils forwarded their recommendation to increase the 2011 catch limit to NOAA's Fisheries Service, which has agreed to increase the catch limit. The proposed catch level for 2011 is consistent with the level set by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission for state waters.

Rewards for Tagged Spiny Dogfish
NOAA Fisheries Service’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center has launched a cooperative initiative to tag spiny dogfish (/Squalus acanthias/) in the Gulf of Maine, Southern New England, and Georges Bank. This project is an effort to answer long-standing questions about stock structure, movement patterns, and life history of the species in order to update and improve dogfish stock assessments.
Over a two-year period, a minimum of 33,000 dogfish will be tagged during the winter and summer months from three commercial vessels. Some of fish will be double tagged for a tag retention study, and some will be injected with oxytetracycline (OTC) for an age validation study.
Standard fin tags called rototags will be used during the project and will include a toll-free number for reporting required recapture information -- tag number, fork length, date, and location. Anyone who captures a tagged fish and returns complete information can earn either a $20 cash reward for one of the 27,000 white tags or a $100 cash reward for one of the 3,000 "high reward" orange tags.
Recaptures of fish injected with OTC and fish with two tag types -- a rototag and a dart tag -- will require return of the whole fish for a $100 cash reward (3,000 green tags). Whole fish to be returned should be iced or frozen. Shipping instructions will be provided upon contact.

2010 North Carolina Report Shows Continued Recovery and Viability of Saltwater Fish
The N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries’ 2010 Stock Status report shows saltwater fish populations in North Carolina are stable and, in many cases, improving.
Spiny dogfish moved from “recovering” to “viable” based on a 2010 stock assessment that found that the stock has been rebuilt.
Summer flounder remains listed as recovering and striped bass in the ocean and in the Albemarle Sound-Roanoke River Management Area remain listed as viable.
Additionally, bay scallops continue to recover, allowing for periodic season openings in some water bodies. Oysters, while remaining listed as “concern,” have shown signs of improvement with increased landings and increased spat fall in both wild harvest areas and in sanctuaries.
Spotted seatrout, however moved from “concern” to “depleted” based on a 2009 stock assessment. The assessment indicated the stock is overfished and undergoing overfishing based on data from 1991-2008.
The annual stock status report serves as a general barometer of the overall health of North Carolina’s coastal fishery resources, and it is used to prioritize development of fishery management plans and subsequent plan amendments.
